Why You’ll Love this Recipe

It is a perfect way to unwind after a busy day with its cozy and soothing flavor.

Moon milk is naturally calming which helps to relieve stress and let you to relax so you will have a better sleep.

It is easy to make, and is completely adaptable as you can use any type of milk you like. You most likely have all the ingredients you need.

Best of all, I find it is something to look forward to in the evening, like a little caffeine-free treat for getting through the day.

It makes for a great bedtime ritual.

Ingredients:

Ingredients gathered to make a chamomile moon milk recipe. There is chamomile, milk, honey, and cinnamon.

Milk – I use regular 2% cows milk, but you can substitute with whatever milk you normally drink. If you don’t use cows milk, and want a nice frothy milk at the end, then use a “barista grade” or “foamable” non dairy milk

Chamomile Tea – I use dried chamomile from my garden, I grow chamomile from seed every year. If you don’t have that, you can use any good quality dried chamomile flowers or chamomile tea bags

Honey – A teaspoon of honey adds a little extra sweetness

Cinnamon – This is completely optional, but I find a little sprinkle of cinnamon on top gives it an extra level of warmth

How to MAke Chamomile Moon Milk

Chamomile moon milk sounds fancy and complicated, but it really isn’t. All you need to do is warm up some milk, and add in some flavor, then enjoy!

You can either make this on the stovetop, or in the microwave, so I have included directions for both.

I have tried it both ways, and I prefer to let my moon milk simmer on the stovetop as I let my mind drift off. It is a good way to slow down, and start relaxing even before my drink is ready.

I also found that the stovetop method has a more concentrated flavor which I like too. This is probably because some of the milk evaporates while your a simmering it over the stove.

Either way, I can confidently say that I have tried both methods, and they both turn out just fine. But… if you have the time, I would recommend the stovetop.

Stovetop Directions:

Step 1:

Find your favorite mug and fill it with the milk of your choice, then add that to a small saucepan on the stovetop. For reference, my mug fits just over 1 cup of milk.

Next, “warm up the milk” (thinking about that mini wheats commercial now)… do you remember the one? Sorry if that song is stuck in your head now.

Pouring milk from a mug into a saucepan on the stovetop.

Heat the milk over medium (on my stove that was just over a 6 on the dial). Heat just until you start to see a good amount of steam rising from the pot, you want it hot, but not boiling. If you boil it, it could negatively affect the flavor and won’t froth as nicely at the end if you are interested in that.

Heating the milk took about 5 minutes on my stove.

Step 2:

While it is simmering, stir in the honey until melted and fully incorporated, then turn off the heat. Remove the saucepan from the burner, and add in dried chamomile flowers (or chamomile tea bag). Steep for about 5 minutes.

Stir your milk every once in a while as your chamomile is steeping, this will prevent any skin from forming across the top of the milk. If you get a skin on the milk just stir it back in or skim it off – it is just due to the evaporating milk. It is completely edible, but I feel like it may affect your nice foamy top at the end.

Step 3:

Strain your milk into a glass jar with a tight fitting lid, put the lid on and shake for a little extra frothyness in your drink (alternitavely you can use a blender or milk frother).

Straining chamomile out of the milk into a mason jar.

Make sure your lid really is tight, I have tried this before and splattered milk all over my kitchen floor. Ooops.

Shake your glass jar for about 1 minute to get a nice amount of foam. I like to take the lid off a couple times throughout this process to release any steam build up.

Step 4:

Pouring frothed milk from a mason jar into a mug.

Once your milk is warm and frothy, add to your mug and sprinkle a little bit of cinnamon on top and enjoy.

Microwave Directions:

Here is a quicker version, if you are not the stand by the stovetop kind of person and need your calming drink like right now.

Four images showing steps to make a moon milk recipe in the microwave.
  1. Pour milk into your favorite microwave safe mug
  2. Microwave for about 2 minutes (use the beverage setting if you have one). Should be hot but not boiling. Stop the microwave and give your drink a stir about halfway.
  3. Stir in the honey, and add your chamomile, then let steep for 5 minutes (Use a small plate or a lid if your mug has one while steeping to lock in the flavor and heat)
  4. Remove the chamomile
  5. Optional: Use a milk frother to create a little foam on top, or pour your drink in a jar with a tight fitting lid and shake for about 1 minute
  6. Optional: sprinkle a little cinnamon on top

And that is it – then just sit back, relax, and and enjoy.

Tips

  1. I like to use the mug I will drink out of so I don’t have an odd amount left over – a perfect amount every time.
  2. The jar method to froth will give you some nice bubbles on top, if you use a milk frother, don’t use it for too long as you may end up with a ton of foam. Unless you like that of course.
  3. If you are making this in the microwave, I like to put a lid or small plate over my cup while it is steeping. This locks in the aroma and heat a little better.
